This is where I'll keep track of things having to do with pieps.org

Contents

Overall Status

Currently in the process of relocating all major pieps.org services to an offsite server with better pings and more reliable uptime. This will also provide data redundancy so I can rest assured that even if a rogue chipmunk goes on a rampage through my servers, I'll be fine. I'm still intending on keeping a local mirror of everything so that my awesome 35w TDP laptop CPU-powered server has something to do.

mail.pieps.org

Status

Up and running, as far as I know.

*NEW* <10/28/07> Added SSL certificates signed by CAcert. These are less shady than my old self-signed ones, but are still free.

<10/25/07> Fixed support for crypt'd passwords in cyrus-sasl. This means that when users change their passwords, they'll now work outside of the webmail interface.

Todo

Allow for SMTP connections on ports other than 25 (so that people with sucky ISPs can still send mail through pieps.org)

Get internet service that doesn't restrict what email addresses that mail servers using their service can send to.

This could happen in 2 ways:

  1. I could switch my ISP to one that gives me more freedom
  2. I could pay extra for a static IP address from AT&T

The latter would be the most seamless, as I wouldn't have to worry about several factors related to switching my ISP, but the former would probably be less expensive.

I'm not in a rush to take care of this immediately, since I've only had trouble sending mail to addresses@ameritech.net, and very few people I know use that. It's probable that addresses@att.net and any AT&T subsidiary (as well as Yahoo) will fail too, however, and that's more serious.

I do fancy the idea of having a fully-functional, (relatively) secure mail server that isn't tethered to any ISP or third party, so I will get to this in the not-too-distant future.

Todo

Allow for pieps.org mail account holders to edit my wiki and/or have their own.

I'm going to wait until I have more users to do this, since it's hard to get feedback on how I should implement this feature, or whether I should even do it.

Add some sort of CMS to make things look nice. The hand-hacked HTML business is old-school and minimalistic, but using something like Joomla would allow for more flexibility and would make things look slightly less like someone in middle school (or in my case, someone without the patience to make things look nice) designed them. One problem with web pages is that there inevitably needs to be something to put there. CMSs are great, but you need to provide your own C.

Other ideas: Personal web page(s)? Index for other *.pieps.org sites?

So far I've been too lazy to find the cables I need to hook this up to a TV. Also, the wireless repeater I bought specifically for this box doesn't work nearly as well as I'd hoped.

It might take a little while before this monster is up.

Todo

  • Unpack RCA video cable and RCA-1/8" converter cable
  • Get Hauppauge card tv-out working again
  • Ensure that wireless signal in that room is reliable enough

blog.pieps.org

Status

Contrary to the sentiment expressed by the rant about blogs on the main page of this wiki, planning.

music.pieps.org

Concept

Some sort of music streaming thing that allows me to stream my entire library over the internet. Chances are, MythTV will allow me to do this, but if that's not the case, it might be good to look into something like Zina (I originally found out about it here).

Planning

cube.pieps.org

A separate physical server, mostly for mail redundancy purposes.

Status

Down for the forseeable future. May prove useful for remote support of computers at its location, but is quickly becoming a large, shiny paperweight.
