I mostly started this crazy thing as an alternative to a blog. Blogs are inherently angsty and therefore to be avoided, but I still wanted some way of chronicling my wacky adventures and experiences.
Wikis, besides being trendy, are a great way of shoving a bunch of information into one place, and since they don't have that annoying and limiting diary format, they are less conducive to rants and angsty tirades about how that girl I like looked at me today but then I dropped my milk on my shoes and now my shoes are ruined and I started crying because milk on my shoes is a perfect metaphor for my life but also for third-world hunger.
Now I can just say I learned something cool about aerogel and maybe add some depth to my entry on Kosher Smoked Meats. The best part is that I can add some sort of timeline to this if I want to (or just leave Special:Recentchanges and Special:Allpages to do that for me), or use some other interesting way of categorizing and presenting the content here. And I don't even need to be angsty about it!
Then again, if I really felt moved to do so, I could make some sort of Super Sappy entry and bring tears to your eyes with the Onion of Infinite Emotion.
At the very least I have a cool new way of keeping track of random crap wherever I am, provided my (now-broke-ass) cell phone can find a suitable open wireless access point.
I also now have a way to keep track of Bomb-Ass Recipes that I've found. And even better, you can add your favorite recipes for great justice!
